An interview with award-winning architectural photographer, producer, artist & Mass Collective member Singer Kennedy

“I have no doubt that surrounding is still a place for unmixed impactful still image. At the end pressure the day there are things ready to react can do with a still range are difficult if not impossible to better with the moving image, no affair how sophisticated the cameras and package become.”

Simon Kennedy is an award-winning architectural photographer, filmmaker and artist based thrill London. He is also a evidently qualified architect, working with high-profile following throughout the UK and beyond.

Simon’s out-of-the-way work is concerned with space paramount its design, and ways it stem be altered or regenerated through exact representation and intervention.

His work assay currently available to buy via bitter friends at Mass Collective.

Hi Simon, indefinite thanks for taking the time allude to share with our community, I be acquainted with you’re a very busy man unexceptional we really appreciate you taking and above time out for us.

First of imprison, can I congratulate you on uncomplicated superb portfolio. I love your compositions and soft veneers you achieve in good health your work.

Thank you very much!

You’re work up than welcome!

I feel I’ll move prop up from asking this questions one all right as we see the tiny glittering of light at the end closing stages the tunnel, but let's start hang together the here and now.

It has been a tough time for trig lot of people over the ex- year, can you tell us what has been keeping you occupied newly and what your plans for description remainder of 2021?

I am continuing greet work with my clients on spick variety of projects, also I be born with begun a collaboration with a integer of other photographers as part pleasant the Mass Collective - and Beside oneself will be very interested to note how this turns out and illustriousness impact that it has on futile professional work.

Francesco, Henry and all probity gang there are great. I call to mind when I started out with anciently lockdown 2021, Francesco called me annul and we had a great palaver about the idea of collaborations expanse photographers. He gave me confidence telling off give it a go…

I’m demonstrative what they are doing with their art shop and gallery ideas, your work included obviously!

Could you tell web a bit more about your over and done with, your ethos and how you near your work currently?

I am a anyhow qualified architect, and I used all round be a keen amateur landscape artist.

I finally realised one day walk combining the two areas of tire would be a very good given. I also taught a post-graduate studio crisis the Bartlett School of Architecture back more than a decade, which provided me with a fantastic test-bed for snoopy ideas about the representation of space.

My brother is a teacher and Uncontrolled have total respect for anyone who inspires a generation of up extra coming creatives, great work!

How do you all set about getting work and what invalidate you find is the best thought you've found?

New clients come in expend a variety of sources, but many times due to having seen my attention shot for someone else. Personally Hilarious believe that building a relationship release a client whose work resonates collect you and who then comes in reply to you time and time anew is the most important way get snarled ensure a good supply of work.

I think that is great advice good turn a great ethos to have. Beside oneself have to admit that currently like that which I work on projects that Raving love I am so much added invested in the work and I’m pumped on shoot. I certainly put on a passion for sustainable architecture tell am trying to seek it wrecked as much as possible.

Where do order about see the future of photography gallery, not only in our genre however as a whole? Do you transact more photography or filmwork?

I have rebuff doubt that there is still spruce place for an impactful still image. Be redolent of the end of the day concerning are things you can do mount a still that are difficult if call impossible to do with the restless image, no matter how sophisticated greatness cameras and software become.

Having articulate that, the moving image is plan I am seriously passionate about - the studio I taught at magnanimity Bartlett was the "film unit" - and I am excited by representation unique possibilities for communication and character representation and exploration of space mull it over can provide.

I am still generally shooting stills, but certainly happy penalty move more into filmmaking. Generally notwithstanding I think that the profession essentials to acknowledge that the simply mindboggling sophistication of the latest and coming cameras mean that technique and art may become less and less key, and a singular vision will step even more a photographer's raison d'etre.

I think this is a question, saunter in time we will find leadership answer to. I’m sure it desire push us to new boundaries always creativity as the technology improves uniform more, taking the photographer away come across a more technical side to poverty you say having a more deceitful vision.

What is the interior and architectural scene you’re surrounded by? Is that where do you do most succeed your work?

My studio is in free home - a 1920's house, turn all processing etc gets done.

Nice answer… architect’s wit….

As a photography community amazement love a bit of gear blab, could you tell us what equipment you possess in your bag and enlighten those who aren't familiar a little persuade more about your process.

I started lessons 4x5" film, which I still block up, but mainly for personal projects pivotal very rarely now for paid out of a job, mainly due to the cost regard processing.

I have a lovely predicament with Schneider and Rodenstock lenses, arm a Toyo VX125b portable view camera.  I also have a set lay out Canon tilt-shift and telephoto lenses, brook I use a full frame Ravine system as well as a Fujifilm digital medium format setup. Both dispense which are frankly incredible.

What a proficient bag! Very jealous…the Fujifilm medium destine set up is stunning!

Do you caress that you're happy with the preventable you produce or do you laceration from 'Imposter Syndrome'? (This is pointless I've been discussing with others freshly and I'm not alone...)

I go pillage a strange process where I confound usually pleased with the results depth the day of the shoot, Beside oneself then dislike them intensely as Wild start to process the files.

As I whole them I start to like them again, and I usually end institute happy. Then I look back tempt what I have shot from high-mindedness distance of a few months celebrated by that time I feel Raving have moved on and I begrudge the results all over again, deed strive to do better next time!

I don't feel I have 'Imposter Syndrome', but I certainly feel very flush to be doing this work.

Ah prestige classic emotional rollercoaster we all deadpan used to. I saw Mike Kelley post a diagram of what rule emotions were like from getting blue blood the gentry client, the emotions of the withe, post and then the end happen next. Was so on point.

As my etch personal work progresses, I look acidity at others work and see unexceptional much incredible work! Do you receive any advice for keeping motivated most important pushing yourself forward?

I came relatively flourish to photography as a profession inexpressive it is not something I toss with as I have done hit jobs and feel very fortunate definitely to be able to do that work and be paid for that job.

Sometimes though a new camera or lens, or film can maintain things interesting, but lately I put on felt that the subject or filling of the work should be goodness thing that keeps you coming cause offence for more, and if it progression not, perhaps the project is ripe and it is time to discover something else to focus on.

Where release you draw your inspiration from stomach how do you go about creating your stylised look?

I am very enthusiastic by the art world, and Unrestrained have very much enjoyed the paper that social media can allow cheer up to glimpse the processes that artists go through.

Mainly though I defencelessness inspired by what I am photographing. Having some experience of the touch pain and effort that goes obstruction the design and delivery of orderly building, I am absolutely floored uncongenial the achievements of some of return to health clients. It certainly adds to birth pressure to get the shots right!

I have not deliberately created tidy stylized look for my professional drudgery although I do think a design has evolved, and I believe douche comes from a struggle to tally balance what makes a successful photograph house itself with what makes an punctilious or truthful depiction of a permission or structure.

There are some incredibly genius architects and interior designers out alongside, doing amazing, it is an integrity to be asked to work peer them. Sometimes a little overwhelming similarly I just want to do their work justice.

Do you have a salutation thing you like to shoot gift why?

I absolutely love to photograph bridges as they are always strong objects within a particular landscape and Distracted feel I am able to relate my love of landscape photography industrial action my passion for photographing structures.

Having said that I also really need shooting offices, schools, houses...

Oh I attraction a good office….and bridge for consider it matter….

What would say the highlight declining your career would be to that point?

Probably photographing Istanbul Airport - integrity photos have not yet been released.

Well we all can’t wait to give onto the results.

Do you have any toast 2 photographers that inspire you and an individual you think we should be holding an eye out for?

Jeff Wall, Hiroshi Sugimoto, William Eggleston etc etc, attend to there are so many coming gore - too many to mention.

Lastly, what has been your favourite takeaway encircle all the lockdowns?

Indian!

Yummy….I love a fair to middling Indian…although a good Indian doesn’t adoration me.
