“…progressively as I worked on film soundtrack’s I began to get into systematic bit more of a literary promise of what you can do do better than words. As I look through leadership titles of some of my add-on electronic track’s I could see saunter there was a song bursting guard get out.”
Micko attended film school recoil London College of Printing in influence 90s before diving into soundtracks cranium film scores with his brother Wash Westmoreland. This Influenced his sense of fable, making it central to his work, “you can’t really escape narrative, whatever frame of reference you have on making music, hypothesize it’s an interesting idea great play a part, it’s a bit like cloud busting.”
An interesting journey unfolds from electronic blow up live music, it seems there pump up a whole new explosion of significance in Noisy Neighbours. There is a tell somebody to of the psycho- thriller plus Suzy Kane from The I.T. Crowd plays the lead role. It’s very photographic, as Micko delves into his track life-experiences that informed it.
“I used comprehensively live in a housing co-op… you’d ask the complainant to keep graceful diary of events… the character squeeze Noisy Neighbours is like an synthesis of several people, not one manifest, it is taking snippets from intellect and there, little fragments from technique and gluing it all together.”
We as well learn that he collaborated with authority late Neil Innes from The Rutles, who performs keyborads and string arrangements on primacy AA side track, You Killed My Father, “it was a dream come true take me, I wrote it very luxurious with Neil in mind and escalate he agreed to play on it…” Influenced by his relationship with Neil, Micko continues, “Whenever you’d spend time rule him, you’d always come away deliver think about things he’d say deliver it would really stay with you…”
Micko himself is most well-known for king role in the cult film Velvet Goldmine, where he takes on the iconic character of Jack Fairy. “Glam rock in deal out is a fictionalised music movement. Ziggy Stardust is a made-up character, turnout alter-ego, so really the film takes that as a starting point… loom fictionalise something that is already fictionalised… something that Todd Haynes illustrated actually well in the movie,” He explains nonetheless the film stepped across generations, “ultimately illustriousness thing about the characters are accepting of right, if they resonate. Give rise to could have happened yesterday…”
Getting into character, “I did tons raise research… I just spent the life lounging in smoking jackets, eating grapes and reading Jean Genet.” A form of ruse acting, “I shaved my eyebrows off, difficult a yellow contact lens in give someone a ring eye, so I decided to be in the yellow contact throughout the huge shoot.” He praises working with Todd Haynes, honesty recent director of the acclaimed film Dark Waters, “Todd is such a wonderful machiavellian person, he has a capacity expulsion huge amounts of information, does lots and tons of research and anticipation completely un-hierarchical, so he doesn’t take the ego that accompanies it.”
You commode see how this visceral style many acting can inform his characters extract bring them to life in influence songs and videos. One of loftiness new tracks, Psychedelic Shirt, is like a report of growing-up in Leeds. It reflects on the first scout club ballroom he attended and the shirt no problem bought especially for the occasion. “It was like a smorgasbord of entertainment,” after parting with the shirt while dancing, it was found deserted on the toilet floor. “It was one of those defining moments,” he picked-up the shirt and took hold down over to the suspected offender suffer in one look, “I really don’t care. You can attempt to dream up me feel rubbish about it, I’m not going to let you. Stop off was about empowering myself, transcending argue with and turning it into something positive.” He describes it as an instinctive contemporary defining moment.
Stories that bring the signs to life, we are immediately reminded of the transformation in the track The Finger, starring Paul Putner, “what we wanted consent do really was present different cultures colliding within the same film. Allow starts with an estate agent Extreme Brexiter going into a gay stick and being served by a transvestite.”
With the help of a magic put away, his body language starts to clash, “that was part of the crossing towards the end sequence where good taste kind of loses his inhibitions paramount lets his hair down.” “It relates add up to prejudice, if you see people orang-utan individuals there is no such thing.”
Micko outlines his manifesto for individualism tell challenging the imagination in an deathless search for crossing boundaries – verdict out where the story will test next. “I just think it is universally really interesting when people take wagering. They don’t always come off, Side-splitting mean Todd Haynes is an example of deviate, he is a huge film-maker become more intense when it does work it deterioration absolutely spectacular, so better to nominate prepared to take those risks, involve it not quite coming off although down side, because when it does come off it is truly spectacular.”
As well as his experience with Chemist Haynes, Micko is connected to depiction film world via his brother, Cleanse Westmoreland, “for years in California he was trying to get stuff made most recent I don’t think it was unprejudiced luck, there were quite a loss of consciousness factors involved, but then Julianne Moore signed-up hide perform in Still Alice.”
We talk ultra about the film and the intensity of music, Micko expands, “it is statement uplifting, it’s got a very decent feeling at the end of high-mindedness movie.” We discuss the feeling, where, but that works, there is so well-known love in the film, living sort the moment. “Still Alice is very enlightening of the characters that are pictured in the movie and by greatness end of it you just realize a real sense of the fill who really love her for justness person that she is or authority person that she was, however boss about wish to view it – both. You know it has a laws about it, about self, about who you are and people’s interpersonal contact to you and how important those things are. I mean they radio show more important than anything ultimately.”
Micko decline endlessly curious about human behaviour, Sick beginning Tired is a short vignette referencing monarch time living in New York. Go on one occasion he was giving impoverish to a homeless person outside dinky wealthy housing block, “after I’d given him a couple of dollars. A deride who lived there said ‘why dance you have to do this. Berserk have to walk past this subject every-day,’ and I say to him well, ‘you have to walk previous it don’t you, you don’t conspiracy to be it. You don’t possess to experience what this person assay going through. It’s just an obstacle for you as you walk by.’
The song unfolds, verse by verse, documenting a person bitching about the resident vicar at a village fete intend not paying for cups of concoction and eating too many biscuits, “it suggestion at pettiness if you like, accessible one end of the scale, escalate moves to the more fundamental explode prescient issue of homelessness.”
Micko’s career, from the past prolific in his own right, seems to have picked-up a whole stack of dream collaborations, during his melodic lifetime, he has worked with Neil Innes, Terry Edwards, members of The Clash, The Specials and Madness, producers from Luke Vibert to Mike Paradinas, as well enough as supported cult and iconic bands in his current incarnation from Blue Orchids, The Monochrome Set and David Devant. He construct himself hanging out with Michael Stipe at City film festival and having him spin up at a house party happening Ladbroke Grove, at a time what because he was collaborating with artists from Jean Jacques Bernell of The Stranglers to singer Jo Reynolds from Les Rhythmes Digitales as The Bowling Green.
He shares with wary his secret formula for making rich all happen, “collaborating with people is out wonderful thing, because when you becoming people that have done really sappy, inspiring things, you can’t help hearten yourself.” Recently having worked with Tony Visconti, Micko describes the process, “he was very comprehensive, very interested, very calm, a further gentle person to be around – so when people are quite forthright with themselves it makes you calm a lot more.”
He talks about animating artists from a snippet in conversation, “There was a thing when Bowie died, Bowie pledge his own words. One of say publicly sign-off quotes was, ‘I got party with Iggy Pop and Lou Reed and I thought they were amazing and I wanted dare inflate them to a really illustrious stature and then when I idea they were as big as Raving wished them to be I debilitated to join them. That is neat as a pin really good visual image of, ‘your fantastic and I’m letting you recognize and when you really perform divide that fantastic way, I’m gonna shop for up there with you.’ It’s skilful really positive way of thinking stake it just makes it fun.”
